ב) ה’ אֲדֹנֵינוּ מָה אַדִּיר שִׁמְךָ בְּכָל הָאָרֶץ אֲשֶׁר תְּנָה הוֹדְךָ עַל הַשָּׁמָיִם:
Hashem our master! How uniquely mighty shall Your Name be one day over all earth: You, Who constantly proclaims your being and Your might unto the heavens.
This posuk outlines the central theme of this chapter and will be further explained in the coming pesukim.
Rav Shimshon Refoel Hirsch explains that the final refined product to be gained through the ‘gitis’, through the subjection of mankind to the ‘winepress’ as it were, will be the spreading of the worship of Hashem throughout the earth. Until this point in time, this gift of recognition of Hashem has been the portion of Israel alone. The eventual universal acknowledgment of Hashem is referred to by chazal as יין המשומר בענבים, ‘the wine that is cherished in the grapes’, until the day that mankind shall have reached its ultimate goal.
The posuk should therefore be read as follows. ‘’O Hashem, Who is now אדונינו, our Master, Whom we now recognise and acknowledge as the ruler over all our lives and as the guide for all our aspirations, how uniquely mighty shall Your Name be throughout the entire earth one day.’’
If there was one verse that sums up Rosh Hashana, I think this is it. Rosh Hashana is an opportunity to reaffirm that Hashem is master over our lives, and that the vision starts with us and ends with all of humanity.
