Glory and Splendour

The Malbim explains that the second claim was in terms of his activities.

Hashem’s unlimited wisdom is evident in the creation of man in two distinct ways.

The Sefer Haikkarim writes that a craftsman’s expertise can be recognised in two different ways.

  1. Making small, subtle and sophisticated forms with precious metals, which are by nature suitable for such works of art, such as a master goldsmith fashioning something out of fine gold. Being that gold is a material that lends itself to fine jewellery and similar items, the value of the finished product is determined by the finished product rather than the work that went into it.
  2. Forming wonderful works of art from wood or iron where the raw materials do not naturally lend themselves to such beauty. In such a case the value is largely determined by the recognition of the amount and expertise of the craftsman’s work that went into creating the finished product.

Both of these elements exist within man.

In terms of his spiritual essence, Hashem has crafted a magnificent soul. The soul, due to its spiritual nature is ready made to receive wisdom, understanding and enlightenment. In this case, Hashem’s handiwork is recognisable from the finished product.

Regarding the body, Hashem created incredible forms from earth, flesh and bones, which are not naturally predisposed to being formed into such a complex system. As such, Hashem’s handiwork is recognisable from the work itself and the greatness is ascribed to the craftsman.

David Hamelech refers to these two aspects when he says

וכבוד והדר תעטרהו  and You crown him with glory and splendour

Kavod refers to the soul (as has been explained before) as it is intrinsically glorious, being that it comes directly from Hashem.

Hadar on the other hand refers to the body  because of its external splendour. (The Malbim explains that this is always the difference between Hod and Hadar, Hod refers to inner beauty and Hadar to external beauty).

The wisdom that can be seen in the creation of man is far greater than anything else that exists in the physical world.
