The View from the Top

(ט) צִפּוֹר שָׁמַיִם וּדְגֵי הַיָּם עֹבֵר אָרְחוֹת יַמִּים:

The birds of the sky and the fish of the sea, indeed, He strides over the paths of the seas.

The final Malbim on the chapter says that birds and fish are further removed than the sheep and cattle mentioned previously. He explains that this is why they were created of the fifth day of creation rather than this sixth. The more removed something is from man, the less useful it is to him. The closer something is to man, the more useful it is.

He says that there is a hierarchy of creation and depicts it as if man is standing at the pinnacle with domesticated animal below him. Below them are wild animals followed by birds. At the bottom of the pile, furthest removed from man are the fish.

All of these creatures  connect together to form an ecosystem, a pyramid to sustain the world with man at the apex. It is then man who can stand proud an exclaim the final verse of this chapter

ה’ אֲדֹנֵינוּ מָה אַדִּיר שִׁמְךָ בְּכָל הָאָרֶץ:

Hashem,  our Master, how mighty is Your name in all the earth!
