ב) שִׁירוּ לַה’ בָּרְכוּ שְׁמוֹ בַּשְֹּרוּ מִיּוֹם לְיוֹם יְשׁוּעָתוֹ:
Sing to Hashem, bless His Name, proclaim His salvation from day to day.
As is well known, the word ברכה means more than just ‘blessing’. According to many authorities, it is a request that Hashem extend more of Himself into the world. Therefore when we make a bracha, in essence we are creating more awareness of Hashem. The Maharal points out that the root letters ב ר כ have the numerical values of 2, 200 and 20, implying extension and increase.
Rav Hirsch therefore interprets ‘bless His Name’ as meaning that we should advance and spread knowledge of Him to the entire world. We do this through proclaiming that He gives us salvation from day to day. Our job is to proudly proclaim that not only are extraordinary ‘supernatural’ events from Hashem, but also the day to day ‘true being’ of man attained in day to day life constitute a generous gift from Hashem who cares for us with never ending devotion.
