More than Just a Creator

ז) הָבוּ לַה’ מִשְׁפְּחוֹת עַמִּים הָבוּ לַה’ כָּבוֹד וָעֹז:

Ascribe to Hashem, [you] families of peoples, ascribe to Hashem glory and might.

The Meforshim explain that this pasuk means that they should actively speak about Hashem’s glory and might (Radak, Metzudos and Ibn Ezra) and that they should realise and articulate that true power belongs to Him alone. Glory in this context refers to His actions and might is His kingship being revealed into the world (Seforno).

The Malbim says that you, the nations of the world should not ascribe anything at all to any other power, rather that they should realise that Hashem is the ultimate source of all existence. The need to ascribe glory and might comes because there are people who believe in Hashem as the Creator but then think that He left the world to its own devices. This is likened to a king who resides in his palatial chambers and delegates all matters of state to his noblemen and advisors who run the country according to  the laws that he has enacted without deviating from them in any way whatsoever. In such a case he may be honoured because he is the king, but there is no fear of him or appreciation of his power, because he is powerless to change anything.

Therefore this pasuk tells all of humanity to honour Hashem because He is the creator and also to ascribe glory and might to Him, because He actively runs the world and directs nature according to His will and in response to mankind’s choices.
