Not Nearly Close Enough

ח) הָבוּ לַה’ כְּבוֹד שְׁמוֹ שְׂאוּ מִנְחָה וּבֹאוּ לְחַצְרוֹתָיו:

Give to Hashem the honour of His Name, take up the offering of homage and come into His courts.

The Malbim places much emphasis on the end of the pasuk that tells them to come to His courtyard, the implication being that they cannot come closer than that. Here, Hashem is likened to a king who dwells in the innermost chambers and is not readily accessible to his subjects. Humans are like servants who bring the king an offering and leave it in the courtyards with his noblemen. They are unable to enter into the king’s inner sanctum and have to make do with a relationship that has an element of distance within it.

This is the nature of the relationship that nations of the world will have with Hashem if they only honour Him due to the fact that they recognise that He is the Creator. The whole world is considered to be His courtyard and they are unable to rise above it, despite having an awareness of Hashem.

Of course this relationship is far from ideal and a more desirable level will be explained in the next pasuk.
