The Difference between Heaven and Earth

ישמחו השמים ותגל הארץ

The heavens will rejoice and the earth will exult

As has been explained in Tehillim chapter 8, the heavenly spheres run according to set cycles. Very rarely, if ever do they veer from the course that has been charted for them. As such the pasuk says yismechu hashamyim, the heavens rejoice with simcha as this is something that is ongoing and constant.

Life on earth on the other hand is not so straightforward. Hashem’s providence works in response to mankind’s free choices, with there being very real consequences to our actions. As such, this world does not function according to a rigid, set pattern. Our lives and our circumstances are much more fluid. Since events on earth are constantly changing, the appropriate term to use is gila, hence the term vesagel ha aretz.

The two parts of the clause are therefore read as meaning, even though the heavens operate with a fixed sense of simcha at performing the will of Hashem, nonetheless the earth will always retain its sense of renewal, rejoicing in Hashem’s hasghacha with a palpable sense of gila.
